Well after UPS dropped the tranny and broke the stator. I've finally got it back and in what seems to be good shape. It is a Performance Automatic super streeter C4. Then i ran into another problem, my old tranny was a pan fill transmission and the PA is a case fil. So i had to get a new bellhousing which should arrive tommorow evening, it mounts to the pump on the case fill c4. Old one mounted to the case and not the pump.
So saturday the fun begins. We are going to run new lines and an external oil cooler. And install this baby, hopefully. Can't wait till its all said and done. They now sell this same tranny in summit for $950ish? It can be had shipped from a supplier on ebay for $745. I also got a bellhousing from mmerlin on ebay. Also bought another torque convertor from summit. TCI brand. So we are trying to do this right the first time and not have to worry about it for years to come. I probably could have gotten an AOD but it wouldnt have lasted as long as this tranny SHOULD.

Good luck with the swap! i know this sounds like a load of crap, but be careful and use some sense when it comes to safety. we like this site too much to loose its owner 8)

Or Orrrrr
Know some contacts and get the trans rebuilt for almost free!
Case in point,
Just two months ago I had my Pontiac Fiero THM-125C trans rebuilt for racing applications for only $215 of parts and a case of beer plus rebuilt '67 C-6 for a '69 F150 truck w/390 cid with 6-pack for $225 for parts.
The catch is he wants a round trip ticket-passes on an airline (postive seat tickets). The trick is to just to happen to work for an airline that does hands out tickets for free to employees.
Trans rebuilder is +35 plus years of working for Eagle Transmissions and and a self employeed business of just rebuilding racing applications only trans to the public for twenty plus years.
So for parts only (out-of-pocket expense) I just received two trans for parts and a case of beer.
Good luck about the C-4 work.
Just one question, what stall speed convertor did you use and why?

I went with a just better than stock convertor. A TCI saturday night special heh heh. I beleive its around 2000-2200 stall. My car is mainly a daily driver, with a little play from time to time. The reason i went with pretty much a racing c4 is i didnt want any chance of me damaging it, and it would be able to handle any future engine tuning/additions. A higher stall IMO would be for people who like to play more than daily drive. Would have cost me $400 locally to have it rebuilt. So spending a little more for upgraded c4 in my mind was just a better deal. $660 for the tranny + freight ($745 total) Plus we might not have found out that my tranny lines were clogged if we had someone else do it. Which they were BADLY clogged.
I shouldnt get hurt to bad i usually have my uncle and/or pops help me with pretty much everything i've done to the car since they have been there done that.
Solo hows the track car idea coming along? I still think you should try to sell your car in hemmings and then find another and build it up.

bswor,
That stall speed is LOW, I would think that the 2,500 to 2,700 rpm range would be more suitable for you. This would take advantage of the CAM / Intake manifold mid to high peak range. Most dual plane intakes starts kicking-in above 1,500 witrh mid peakes in the 2,500 to 4,000 rpm range. What CAM profile are you using?
Back in the 289 hi-po days the CAM range is in the 2,500 to 5,000 rpm range. All torque convertors should at least match the CAM profile.
Next year my 2005/2006 project will be to match the C-4 to the 2,500 to 2,800 rpm min range for good low end torque launches. I can not rule out the 2,800 to 3,200 range. If I do then the rear ratio will have to be considered. Luckly the Trac Lock rear end can take the pounding.
Can we say subframe re-enforcements.

Well thats just it i have no idea what cam i'm using. Engine and all was don before i got the car. So im at a disadvantage. what kind of differences would i see with 2500-2700? Plus its too late now heh, ima get this baby back on the road this weekend hopefully. Bellhousing arrived today and fits.

$%#$#@%#%$#^%$^%^@%$^%$#$%@#$%
Ok what gives!!! Is it impossible for me to get my transmission installed. Yet again more drama in the install progress. Bellhouse arrived yesterday and after closer inspection it has 5 stress cracks. Called mmerlin from Ebay..... He is issueing a call back tag from UPS. He says he has no idea how it happened. First time something like this has happened he says. So looks like im going to have to wait ANOTHER TWO weeks im sure. Before i get the replacement etc.... I was unable to find one (bellhousing) locally here in the boonies. Gives purchasing stuff online a bad name. [End venting]
Kind of makes me feel like my avatar.
