Can anyone tell if the shifter opening is different size for 4 speed vs auto?

I always thought the console was the same regardless of trans.

there is a diff between the 4 spd and auto console inserts. the 4spd extends down toward the floor a little more than the auto version and is also offset slightly at the bottom of the opening toward the driver side. you can actually use an auto on a 4 spd and the 4spd console on an auto car by cutting off the extended portion of it.

So an auto console will work fine for a 4spd w/no cutting. If you want to use a 4spd console for an auto you have to trim to fit the shifter bezel because the plastic extends to the carpet.

correct
