Just got the car back friday eve. My son (11 year old) and I are going to detail the engine compartment.

The engine order goes in this week and should be ready by end of Jan. Changed my mind on the trans. Looks like the direction I'm going is Modern Drivelines T5 conversion set-up. I spoke to them a few times and I must say they are very pleasant as well as knowing their stuff. I'm always skeptical of "bolts right in" but this looks like the real deal

Anyone done it?

When I'm done (if not completely broke) wheels, tires, suspension will be next.

I'm going to be doing this myself soon pulling the engine to detail it before paint. I really havent looked into it, any tips for the two of us?? Or what are you going to do maddogla? Going as far as painting the engine?

In the past, when there was motor in the car, after a good steam clean. I'd take out everything I could minus the block, heads, manifold, exh, sand the compartment walls w/some 400 grit and wipe it down. I like to paint the engine first because it's easier to mask when painting the walls of the compartment. Paint walls w/rustoleum black semi gloss from a spray can. I found that flat black was too hard to keep clean and gloss shows too many inperfections. I know the spray can sounds bush league but take a look at the previous engine (page 6 in the big thread) and it works really well and it's a breeze to touch up.

Clean everything and reassemble.

I may trot out the old spray gun now that there's no motor in the car. I know I can lay the paint down nicer this way but much more difficult to touch up.

Ordered the Flaming River steering box today.

Non power steering? My old original box was worn out and i picked up the flaming river box and it was a great purchase. I'll keep those tips in mind.

Another good engine compartment color that is a little closer to original is Plasticote (I think) "Semi Flat". Not too flat and not too glossy.

Thanks mach. I do a test w/plasticote. My friend has a steam cleaner and we did the empty compartment sunday. I had the day off today and spent it sanding. I think one more day of prep and and she'll be ready for paint.

Hope everyone had a great holiday.
