Well, I've been working here and there on getting the car degreased so I can start breaking down the suspension and brakes this week.
Here's some pics. I have sooo much todo but luckly I have some serious motivation with this past warm up over the weekend.
Any advise on cleaning up in inside? I'm just going to get my grinder and a wire cup and go to town unless someone has a better idea besides media blasting. Luckly there are only a few rot spots so I'll be welding those closed over the weekend as well. Then I'm coating everything in POR15, up and down, all over. Except the body pannels of course.
Should be pretty fun!

Shit, someone might want to move this thread to the garage section. I didn't notice I posted it in the tech forum. Sorry.

That is what I have been using, it takes a little time but it has cleaned up my interior, just make sure you wear safety glasses. I have also heard that the oven cleaner (not the cheap brand, but not the expensive) does wonders on removing paint and undercoating. But you have to wash it off with water after you apply it.
Lookin good..

wow those pics look famiular i seem to have that same display in my garage lol
yeah oven cleaner does really good on paint removal but not soo much on undercoat mr muscle oven cleaner used to be the best but i think they stopped making it
if you have small parts that you need to clean buy a gallon jug of castrol super clean and use it as a soak it takes about a day to get off heavy junk but it works really well just be sure to cover your soaking bucket cause it evaporates
the only things i have found to do a good job on undercoaying are the old propane torch and a putty knife unless its the spray can undercoat then laquar thinner does pretty good on it

If you can get some dry-ice,It works perfect for the undercoating sounds wierd but it works!!!

How does the dry ice work? Cracks it?
The stuff on my car is thick! Real thick! Rock hard. I'll try a torch.

The dry ice freezes it to the point of cracking and then you just tap the frozen section and it shatters right off. But it doesn't really work very well on things on an angle like fender aprons because you can't keep the stuff in one place!
Also, i don't think it matters how thick the undercoating is.

Well, last night I went and bought the whole POR15 set up.
I'm going to degrease with Marine Clean, then etch it with Metal Ready then shlap on the Chassis Semi Gloss Black POR15. I figured I could degrease with a cheaper degreaser and that whole route then i decieded if i'm doing it. I'm only doing it once.
And if the undercoating falls off, I'll do it again. lol :D

Where did you get the POR-15 stuff and if you don't mind me asking who much was it?
Aw4g63
03-14-2007, 08:28 AM
I got it from my local auto paint shop, Premier Paint Technologies.
It was $240 for the gallon of POR15, Metal Ready & Marine Clean.
Well worth it to NEVER have to worry about rust again. The stuff is the most amazing paint.

Do you spray, brush or roll it on?
Aw4g63
03-14-2007, 10:27 PM
You can do it however you wish but I'm using a brush. If it gets on ANYTHING that it shouldn't be on, you aren't removing it easily.
I would never spray it. F that. The stuff is wicked. It actually levels very nicely when brushed on.
In my opinion, I'd NEVER restore a car without POR15ing the underside and bay.

It's worth it. The degreaser is your call but I chose theirs becuase the price isn't that bad and it's better to do it right once!
I should have more pics up this weekend.
Last night I pulled the harness and lower dash out.

Good luck with the transformation. Sounds like we are both at about the same stage with our vehicles (although mine is a '68). I also just bought a Husky aircompressor back in December (80 gallon, 2-stage).

The Weld Draglites and tires were actually bought for my '66 fastback, back in '95. Just before I sold the fastback in '96, I pulled the wheels and tires off it and put them on my '68 (I've owned the '68 since 1982 --high school car).
My '68 originally came with non-power drum brakes all the way around, with an 8-inch rear. I replaced the front drums in 1990 with Granada front discs. Up until last year, I had a '79 Versailles 9-inch disc brake rear under the '68.
I pulled the Versailles out and have an '80 model Mercury Monarch 9-inch (formerly drum brake) rear end to put in place of the Versailles. I made some adapters to mount some Cobra rear discs to the Monarch 9-inch rear end for my car;
http://www.ultrastang.com/images/2006/cobrabrakehosemount0243cf_2.jpg
I also designed some brackets to adapt the Cobra discs to the '75 model Granada spindles I have on my '68;
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/4687/g2cbracket003iq1.jpg
With the larger SN-95 brake components, the 15" Welds will have to go. I barrowed a 17" wheel off my '03 Mach 1 and stuck it on my '68 to see what it would look like with the SN-95 brakes;

Hey Ben,
We shake and blow stuff up for a living where I work. "Normally", my work shift is 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. However, we had a very important test to do on a Mk 72, Mod 1, Aegis rocket booster that had to be finished by today (Friday) for Aerojet. I went in at 12:00 a.m., and we finished vibration testing on the Mk 72 about 3:30 this morning, and got to go home early (get a long weekend now :-) ).
Anyway, I work for NTS (National Technical Systems) as a Tech II in the Dynamics department, out in "The Area" in East Camden. NTS is an independent testing firm with locations across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The NTS facility in East Camden, Arkansas is primarily geared to do testing for the U.S. military. We have the longest 120mm (5") gun range in the U.S. --3,000 meters (approx. 2 miles long), where we test M1-A1 Abrahms tank rounds.
Here are a couple of links to footage that was shot at our facility, showing some of our capabilities here at the Arkansas facility. The first link was a feature aired on "Mail Call" on the History channel in 2004:
1. http://www.ntscorp.com/news/historychannel.html
About halfway through this video, there's a blonde headed guy with brown Carhartt pants, blue NTS-logo shirt on, pulling on a large 3/4" ratchet. That's me setting up for a test we were about to do while this video was being shot:
2. http://www.ntscorp.com/news/nts_camden.html
Test we did last year for Hewlett/Packard:

Well guys, I was MIA for awhile but I'm back. I've put over 100 hours into this thing since. lol
My ADD prevents me from accomplishing much in that amount of time. haha.
POR15 Marine Clean is THE BEST degreaser i've ever used. Amazing stuff.
I ended up trying to brush on the POR15, not fun. So I bought a $9.99 spray gun from Harbor Frieght and sprayed it on last night. Came out great.
HOWEVER, since I had the garage closed in fear of overspray resting on my cars or neighbors car I didn't do the best job. After 2 minute I couldn't see and it was kinda dark in areas so with my mask on, the fog of spray and the lighting I went light on a few spots. I'm going to touch up tonight.
Here's some pics: (huge)

Well, I've gotten the rear end in. It was the first step in bolting my new parts on. I'm happy.
Took me and a friend a hour to get the whole rear tightened up. Very nice.
Now, I was shopping around online pricing out brakes.
Basicly, I want all new everything on the brakes.
Front:
Rotors
Calipers
Pads
Rear are 10 x 2 drums
Cylinders
springs
drums
shoes
what else? Hmmmm....
Anyways after seeing the prices online I decided to call my local parts store. Murrays Auto Parts. They have everything. WTF? lol
New calipers for the front are $9.99 with core. lol Everything was very decently priced. I don't care about original and I surely trust their parts. I mean, I put them on my daily drivers, right?
I may go with a better pad but for everything else it's looking pretty good. Maybe save a few bucks and I really don't think i'm comprimising my safety, do you?

Btw, I bought the Laural Mountain suspension kit. You'd think for $900+ that you'd get the nuts and washers for the upper arms, strut mount and shit like that.
It did come with castle nuts but I expected everything. You know?

Calipers for 9.99? Wow, I didn't check local on mine but I wanted slotted rotors. I had to buy one SN95 rear caliper and it wasn't cheap for sure.

Alright, back on track!
I've approached a new game plan for the car. I have no time for heavy body work. Barely enough time for the car, period. So here's my plan.
I have a week off in March. I'm putting new doors and new fenders on the car. This will leave minor body work on those panels plus the roof, pillars and rear quarters. Other then that the car is pretty much on track.
I have most of the suspension installed. Just have to finish assembling the front suspension.
I bought the Maier Racing Trunk lid with the spoiler and fender extensions, I also bought the side scoops from them. Very nice pieces.
Can't wait to get this car ready for paint!

I hated my car, I disliked everything about the coupe. The rear looks like a granny car in my opinion. However the Maeir piece really gave it that super car/hot rod look. I love it. Well, here's another update!
I've enrolled back into school! HVAC school! Yikes! Bad time but the show must go on. I'm working on the car every minute I can. Mostly weekends though. I've been working on body work with a friend, he's fucking good! We pulled most of the lows with his stud puller and started on the roof.
Guys, DON'T BUY CHEAP BONDO! I've always bought the cheap shit, this filler I picked up with his advise is SO EASY to work with. It's outta hand. Sands great, doesn't clog paper and sets quick once it's laid. Much better than Bondo brand!
I highly reccomend it. It was $35 a gallon and worth every cent.
Anyways, here's a bunch more pics!

looking good. yeah, the professional filler is much nicer to work with, i think actual Bondo brand may last longer though, not real sure. i've got bondo on my car that i put on it when i got the car back in 85 that still's there under all the new paint and body work, they said it's lasted this long and is in good shape still so might as well use it. they did grind a little off the top and smoothed on a new layer to flatten it out better though. this was on the roof where i told them not to spend too much time making it perfect since it was getting another vinyl top anyway but they went and smoothed it out a little better anyway, but rather than grind it all out and start over they just used what was already there as a base. point is when properly applied actual bondo brand will last just about forever

Looking good! I went for HVAC in collage too. It's a pretty cool career and you can do a lot of "cool" things. I started out as a tech and worked my way into consulting/contracting/sales, etc. I've done it all. I've work my way into estimating at a state job for the last 8 years. It's kind of boring, but the benneys and pay are quite good. If everything goes well, I'm up for a assitant director position.
Hope you like electrical work. I found as a tech, 80% of the troubleshooting was electrical related, not mechanical.
oh yea, nothing but rage gold filler for me. It's worth the $

Yeah, I've been doing parts & service for 6+ years now. I love it. We specialize in critical cooling and power for data centers and similar applications. I work directly for the manufacture. A position opened as a service tech so I took it. I'll be mostly doing factory start up's and warranty work. Nothing too nasty but I'm sure I'll be dirty in no time. I'd say the company but I don't like linking myself to my employer publicly. If you're in commercial HVAC you'll most likely know who the primary data center cooling "go to" guy is. haha.

Sounds like you already been around the block then, good for you. I started out doing factory start up and warrenty service for a manf rep, so kind of similar. Back then it was Climate Control water source heat pumps. But they got bought by McQuay, so then I got to work on lot of other equipment.
Computer center equipment is a pretty good gig. Usually small enough to handle by yourself, but I'm sure there are some huge intallations out there. Nice thing is it's a priority so people are willing to pay to get it fixed ASAP. Good Luck!

I do HVAC work as well, still an apprentice. Which one would guess would mean I would do all the dirty work? Nope, they really won't let me or any of the other apprentices do anything cause of Union/shop rules, so other than Coil Cleaning its easy. Man Condensor Coil Cleaner BURNS when you dont know to cover everything you can.

You need to use Nu-Calgon Nu-Brite. It's blue. It's not as acidic as those other types. Some of those are fucking horrible. Enough about that work though! Mustangs! Back to work on her tomorrow!

I've got more progress. Worked all day today. Dialed the roof and upper sides in. Looks tits. after the icing and soupy arms. Layed an ass load of urethane primer and threw on a guide coat. I most likely won't be touching it until next saturday. I have a friend rocking this out with me. He's a good dude. Knows his body work too! We worked out a really good deal, he's busting his ass too.
We're thinking we'll be doing all the heavy work first, prime then block and see what little work we'll have.
I'll be picking up my doors and fenders here soon too. We'll get those all on there and then mount my trunk and we should be set. I think over the course of a few saturdays I should be getting close to paint time.
I also have a lot of misc parts I need to clean up and paint. So I'll most likely try to do those on the weekdays and Sundays. My life needs to be with this car. All my time. I want to drive it.

Wow, it's been a year and a half.
I'm back at it though! This is taking me way too long. I started traveling for work a lot so I have weeks where I'm gone. Plus I got into Jetskiing. lol

It may be taking a long time, Aw4g63 but that will make it just that much rewarding when you finally get it back on the road.

Posted this in another thread but I'll copy it here since it makes for a good update of the current status.
"While asking a few buddies I ended up running into a motor that was taken out of a 95 GT. It had just under 75K on it when it was replaced by a built crate motor the kid bought. Paid $300 and it looks pretty ready to go. I could use some paint but that's about it.
So now it's on to all the other nicks & nacks that it'll take to run it. I'm thinking of grabbing a performer RPM intake, a Holly 600 and I have a set of BBK shorties that a friend gave me that were on a 93. I'm excited to get this thing on the road!"

Trav, the trunk set up and scoops are from http://www.maierracing.com/
I love it, the stock trunks on coupes blow.
As an update to all you guys, I bought new fenders, doors, hinges and the front & rear valances last week from Northcoast Mustang here in Willoughby, Ohio. They porked me pretty good I think but Oh well. I'll be getting them on in the coming weeks.

Not really but it looked like someone shot a potato gun full of marbles at them about 30 times. The price of the new stuff out weighed my time straightening the metal and body work.

Well, here's my new game plan, I'm taking 4 days off work to put the motor in, the first week of march. Wiring it up and driving it as is.
I've owned the car for 7 years I think, I need to drive it to have any interest in finishing it. Once I get it driving I'm going to focus on finishing the body work. Until then it's going to be sprayed black. I'll post pictures as this happens.
