Wheel Spacers

I am looking for new wheels for my Mach1 but living in Sweden buying something like American Racing Torq Thrust II cost USD $ 2600 so I am thinking of buying newer Ford models wheels, so How does this "spacer " thing work and how do you work out what spacers you need ?
