In order to succeed, you must first learn how to fail. Somebody said that. So, post some ugly stangs. I'm following Pak's lead and I can recall some other bad stangs (remember the Pimpmobile?) in the past so let's post some good ones.
I'll start it out with: the David Letterman (note gap in bottom vane of the grill)

Hunh, where did I lead you too?
Good idea anyway, pretty ones are everywhere but the ugly ones, man they stick with you for life like luggage.
There isn't a larger pic of the Letterman? I'd like to see a closer look at that grill and what the heck he did, I thought it was a 70 at a glance, I can't belive he yanked the inboard lights.

I actually wish there was a billet grille for the '70 and have wondered how a Shelby mesh grille would look. I even saw a grille painted in chrome that looked good - I think it was Nitrous Eater on stangnet. Letterman is otherwise nice, but that grille has to go.
I looked through cardomain a little more and couldn't find anything really fugly except maybe a drag-oriented car.

Yeah actually Nitrous's car just has the deluxe grande grill, that chrome look is stock just not common and it's only on the front surface. I have been messing with some ideas as well to slightly mod mine. I would like to know if the Shelby grille could be modded too, I'm sure anything can be but I don't feel like spending the money on one to find out and maybe fail.
My current project is to chrome only the vertical bars on the grid of the stock grill to sort of acheive the look you'd get with a billet grill. I am using some adhesive chrome pin striping for the test to see how it looks.
The second plan is to take some diamond shape grill stock simillar in appearance to that of the Shelby side scoops (and grill) and to shape and lay it over the front of the stock grill, perhaps even using a layer of regular fine window screen in between it and the stock to mask the visibility of the grid behind it. I'll post some pics and put it to a vote when I'm done.
i can't believe no one makes a billet grill already for the 69 or 70 crowd.

hey Pak, one thing you can do if you decide to go with the shelby style grille would be to cut out most the horizontal part of the stock grille and leave just a few of the vertical pieces behind it to give it some strength. also if you were to rivet the shelby style grille to the "frame" of the stock grille you probably wouldn't even need any of the "grid work" at all. i'm curious to see how you're chrome grille turns out, if the pinstriping works pretty good you might consider getting a sheet of the chrome mylar from a sign company, most of them should have some in stock and you may even get lucky and get a remnant in the size you need
Pakrat

Yeah good ideas. Becasue I have an extra grill to work with from the parts car, I may experiment further with chopping sections out if my preliminary experiments show some merit.

Hey, well of course I'd be inclined to agree, (before BSWOR tainted me anyway). Probably becasue mine is original and sits just a tad lower than this one does which is probably aftermarket. Still curious how it would look with the new decklid despite the general feelings on it, I'd have to be 100% sure of it to go driiling holes in that new piece though. Think it could be temporarily bonded on with auto grade tape?

true, but it's still fairly easily corrected. cars like the "superbird" car are really hard to fix the UGLY on. the guy that now owns that car is trying to restore it back original and so far has had to replace EVERY PIECE of sheetmetal on it. both quarters, both doors, both fenders, hood, trunk lid, taillight panel, front and rear valance panels, everything except the roof.
like the saying says, beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes stright to the bone.

While we're on the topic of grills, I just replaced mine and have a couple quick questions -
1. The plastic rivits used to attache the grill. I got them from MU. Do you tap the little post until it's flush with the plastic disk for total attachment?
2. I added a new Mustang "running horse" emblem. The old grill and emblem (I think they're original) had the horse attached 7 verticle spaces to the right from the center of the grill, so I put the new one in the same place. I've seen the emblem everywhere on the right side. Which is correct? Pakrat, you're looks like mine.
3. AGAIN, how do the inner headlight doors attach to the grill using the hole up top? I got new screws for the bottom slots, and have temporarily used small wire ties up top.

Yoiks Cam, odd spot for an off topic question, I all but missed it completely. Anyway, I know what you mean, I have seen it all over the place myself on a variety of cars, even show cars. Even in some Ford official adds I have seen it wrong. The assembly manual however says that it is 3 full sections to the left of the headlight bucket, 3 1/2 if you count the half of one that the bucket overlaps in other words.
Oh, as for the other ???'s, 1) Yes and 3) they attach the same as most of the hardware on these cars do. A thin metal U shaped clip nut slides over the tab and has a threaded hole that lines up with the hole in the tab. You then use a sheetmetal screw to secure it.

You know it's funny but over this last week as I have been finally zeroing in on my cars completion my excitement has suddenly been turning into anxiety at the thought of getting back on the road. I honestly don't know if I could take going thru this again and there are so many bad drivers out there. I have no intentions of owning a trailer queen (unless I was like 70, unable to drive and still in love with these cars) so the only alternative would be to give up really.

Double post but here is some text I found in regard to the incident:
David Drummond:
"There were two cars in the garage of the home, a late model Ford Taurus (14k miles on it) and a mint condition 1969 Mach I Mustang. Allen told us that he had wanted one all his life and finally had sold a portion of their farm to realize his life dream of getting one. He only had liablity insurance on the Mustang. Both cars wound up in the field MANY yards SE of the home. I walked this out from the garage to the car today at roughly 275 yards where it came to rest. Also could not see any sign that it had been rolled or drug along the ground, in fact it appeared to have just been "dropped" in place. I am certainly no expert at damage surveys but that is what it looked like to the 4 of use that were out looking at this. Doesn't the car alone qualify this for an F5?"

yeah, i've read every story on that site, funny stuff. too bad that very little of it is true, though i'm sure there is alot of true stuff but most of it's not.
of course i would add some fender flares similar to what you'd see on a late 60's or early 70's TA mustang, blend the whole thing in instead of having the artificial body line created by the side skirts and redo the rear piece extensively. the front is pretty cool as is but still needs to be blended in. the rear "bumper" piece needs some reworking to better resemble a stock bumper at the ends under the 1/4 extensions and needs to be flat on teh 1/4 panels instead of wrapping all the way around to the wheelwells. basically, i would cut off everything above the factory rockers on the sides and above the bottom edge of the 1/4 in the rear. oh and get rid of the hood scoop and just use the factory mach 1/GT scoop, a shaker scoop or a cougar eliminator scoop and replace the rear wing with either the factory mach 1 wing or add the shelby style decklid with the taller ducktail spoiler.
bnickel
07-05-2007, 10:36 PM
it also needs some bigger wheels, which i don't say very often, probably some 17" new style mesh wheels (or the older style like i have) and either some shelby side scoops or no scoops at all like a boss 302 or 70 model.
then paint it black!!!!!!!! with some flat charcoal gray GT stripes and flat charcoal hood "blackout". i'd also paint all the chrome trim black except for the hood trim and door handles.
I almost threw up in my mouth. :scared: It looks as though someone threw up in the engine compartment.

it looks like a picture of saturn on the scoop. this is a perfect example of what was once known as a cafe racer style car back in the late 70's/early 80's. many people consider this style (but not necessarily with the wild paint) the predescessor of the modern Pro-Touring cars, myself included. other names for these cars were street machines or street freaks. this particular one was probably an ISCA show car. at one time i had actually wanted to build my car similar to this with the flares and a big old whale tail spoiler, glad i didn't. i was going to paint it black with gold GT stripes though and no wild-ass paint like this thing had

Geez, what an abomination. Someone obviously saw GISS and ran right out and ordered a bunch of fibergalss and then started to add it any way and every where possible. The grill does look kinda interesting that way though, I was always a little curious about what it might look like that way since the alternate 67' Shelby outboard design was obviously an inspiration to our 69's design. I think if somone created an actual 69' sty;e grill like that there would be a market for it.
Ack.. Now I do like an orange 69/70 but ... ack.

Yeah YEARONE sells the 6 gauge pods. Saw one this past weekend decked out in AutoMeter Phantoms. Asked him if he saved any money going that route and not just buy the JMI cluster. He told me if he had to do it again he would have saved time and effort and bought the JMI cluster. He figured he saved $200 max but took many hours to get it to work.

Man, I got a laugh in early today...Those scoops have "non-OEM" all over them. Most of the time, you put in a fake scoop in a place a real scoop would be doing something. Obviously, for drag reasons, he had to find scoops and turn them backwards so the scoop didn't collect air. The raucous, wtf angle is the sauce...
And he did a marvelous job of turning the beautiful 69 grill into some weird 70 meets 68 jobber with those oversized 'fog-lamps'...
Thanks, i actually chuckled at this one.

Mom was right, there's a first time for everything. We've had lots of people post pics in the past of their personal car in the "Killer 69's" thread but never in the "Ugly" thread.
BTW, anyone getting deja vu from the car Max posted? I could swear this is the second time we've seen this one in this thread but it must have been a broken ebay link because I can't find it.
yep it's been in here before, the really sad part is that it's a 428CJ car!!!!!!
i have to say though i do kinda like what they did with the exhaust openings in the valance, that's pretty cool, sort of a 65-66 style opening with the quad tips

I replied:
Matt,
Thanks, I found the new listing. To be honest, It looks like a base model 69 sportsroof with a 302-2V(non boss) V8 option and possibly exterior appearance group option(dual sport mirrors, bodyside moldings, etc). Nothing special really. Something in the VIN or the data plate codes may point to something special or rare (option combinations) but right now I think its way overpriced. I'm currently shopping for a 74-78 mustang II but I always check out the 69s as they're my favorite year and always looking for a good buy. Good luck

Could be. Since he is targeting Eleahor specifically though I can live with it especially since you have to squint a little to see the influence. Things like the Miata Mustang kit bother me a little more I think since it is meant more to look exactly like a stang.

The longer this thread goes on the more it confirms what I always thought. Mustangs are by far the most butchered cars ever. What I mean by that is you see more Mustangs, of all years, with goofy "custom" body mods, bad "custom" paint jobs, "custom" interiors etc, than any other vehicle that's ever been on the road.

I don't have a real plan for it. I was asked if I wanted to buy it by the PO. I got it for cheap and it's not even on the back burner yet. I thought to put a motor in it and drive it like it is. I have the hood, wheels, trans. etc. The only thing missing is the original motor. My big block tri power motor sitting on the stand would work.
It's a 70 GT500 R code 428 SCJ with the drag pack and 4.30 rear gear. Yep, it was in a small fire. Poor thing, it's only 18K on it. Been parked a long, long time. Bet it was fun to drive.

It was owned by a NASCAR team member back in the 70's. They would take it to the drag strip on weekends to play. It has some very interesting mods done to it. It's bee sitting for over 20 years. I'm glad it didn't get stripped, 20 years is a long time for a Shelby to sit unmolested.

Putting holes in the front spoiler kinda negates the purpose of deflecting the air. All in all not a bad car really. The bad things are easily fixed, toss the bra in the garbage, looks like it comes with a couple of qtrs, remove the frt spoiler or fill the holes if its fglass. Toss the fog lights or at least remount them so they serve a functional purpose other than lighting the tree tops.
