The car had been repainted and was about a 5 footer. The engine aprons and shock towers were a disaster (structurally poor) scab welds everywhere. Interior was poor. My plans are new front and rear suspension, new engine aprons, new paint, this year. Next year new engine and interior. I'll keep the pics coming

IMHO, Its a RestoMod so I'd think Fuel Injection for sure. You also have tons of room in the engine compartment, so a 4.6 or 5.4 supercharged mod motor would be way cool. If you don't have that kind of money you could always throw in a EFI 302 and a T5 or AOD/AODE. Whatever you choose I'm sure it will be cool. Enjoy your build!

What kind of money would I be looking at for a 5.4 supercharged (turnkey) product? Or could I take the 351 Windsor and put a centrifugal or a Magnacharger on it. What would you do? Budget is up to about 8k.

isn't a supercharger going to run at least 3k by itself?

i saw Hot Rod TV put a new coyote motor in a street rod.
What i like about that motor was the SOHC valve covers they put on (or made?). Very cool.
I personally would love to see you put a 5.4 mod long block in your car (with your own accessories and top end. I think that alone would set your build apart from most other builds.
you should at least double your budget for your motor build. that way you don't start taking shortcuts once you see the real expenditures adding up.
well, i guess i'm done spending other peoples money.
good luck!

My vote's for a coyote motor as well! It's $6500 for a complete motor and $1500 for the street rod ECU and harness. There's your 8K right there for a turn key 412hp motor!
Can those brake rotors be driven on??

Everytime I see pics of someone doing the IFS swap I drool. Gotta start saving my money. What provisions did you take to ensure the front end stayed square? Were your frame rails and torque boxes in good enough shape you didn't have to do any repairs?
I have ALOT of rot in my front structure. I'm thinking it would be less work starting fresh with new rails and the crossmember. I want to go that route in the future so I might as well save up and not have to re do the front end twice.
What were your reasons for choosing to go IFS? Engine room? Handling? Old frame damage?

That was Hollywood Hotrods right? They made their own intake that had old school velocity stacks for each cylinder too! Taking a brand new motor and re-designing the top end. It was pretty badass!

I really disliked the shock towers and how they crowded the engine compartment. The torque boxes and frame rails were in good condition (straight). I really like the old look with the more modern components, hence the resto-mod. Front IFS seemed like a good way to get more modern handling, get a rack and pinion, clean up the engine bay, and have the option to go any way I want with the motor and make it all pretty at the same time! :001_smile:

That looks like a TCI IFS setup. You will need to change your oil pan and pick-up on that motor you have pictured to a rear sump if you want it to work with that IFS.

Man Im slow today. Should have read the text between the pictures.
On another note. I have been contemplating the TCI IFS. How was the install of this product? I am by no means a master faber. I also only have a Lincoln 145 MIG. Were all of the templates and guides pretty straight forward when welding in the cross member and other pieces. I would love to pick your brain about the setup.
Before I forget, final question. Did this setup change the backspacing for your wheels, because I already have my wheels and don't want to re-buy them. I know its a lot, but any info would be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you, wondering if my MigPack-10 is up this level of fabrication. Hopefully by the time I have repaired my car's frame rails and welded in new torque boxes my skills will be... adequate haha.
To the guy mentioning having to swap out the oil pan for a deep sump, does this apply w/ a 302 as well? Are there any other mods like motor mounts?

I'm having some one help me ( a lot) with the welding. We are using a Thermo-arc 250 for the frame and a Lincoln 185 for the engine aprons.
The set up is very straight forward. The product is remarkably well engineered. It looks like the rear will be more narrow resulting in a more negative offset (I think) I will have to re-check the measurements.

Yes, with the TCI IFS you have to use a rear sump because the rack and pinion is mounted in the front.

The transition pan had some rust and was in poor condition, so out it came! I'm also prepping the axel housing for the TCI brackets to be welded. I plan on taking out the inner rear wheel wells and "snugging" them up to the frame rails. This should help in running wider tires in the rear.

I also had to cut a bit on the engine aprons that replace the shock towers. These are intended to bolt in after shock tower removal, however I am welding them in, so a larger opening had to be created in order to install the upper A-arms.

Now to add rear sump oil pan to be list of engine components to purchase.
Are there no structural pieces directly under the rear seat platform? It's been a while since I've poked around and I can't recall any bracing perpendicular to the rear Rails.

Ididit column, most likely. The stock column is a little too "worn".

Adding the additional strip brought the inner fender well almost even to the rear frame rails. Gave me an additional 1 1/2 inches. Hopefully this will allow wider tires.

What size wheels and tires do you have up front? Are they just for mock up or are those the actual ones you intend to use? They look massive!

Wheels are for mock up only, they are some old Centerline wheels off a C4 Vette. They are 16 inch, not sure of the width. However, I plan on 18's in the front and 19's in the rear.

What did you use for that front extension piece
Rudolph Schenker
06-12-2011, 04:28 PM
What did you use for that front extension piece
24gauge sheet metal, somewhat rigid and pliable. Remember the front extension sits underneath the dash center (right under the HVAC controls). So while not perfect OEM look, the transition looks good. I wanted something that would fit nicely up underneath. The 2005 console is almost exactly the same width and it has 2 extension tabs on the sides. I used plastic rivets to attach to the sheet metal. There is also a groove all the way around the front of the console that allowed me to "tuck" the sheet metal edge into.
Here is a pic of the underside...............
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v737/rschenker/1969%20Mach%201/IMG_1812.jpg
None of the aftermarket center console pieces look very good (IMO), even the one company that replicates the Shelby console does just an average job.

I had few choices if I wanted power brakes, no room on the firewall for a vacuum booster that wouldn't interfere with the clutch master. Hydroboost was a possibility but required a significant amount of machine work on the housing to fit.
This was an expensive option(1100.00 ), but a very clean install. ABS Power Brakes out of CA makes the unit. Mounts right up to my firewall mounting holes and they made an offset master that would clear my valve covers. No mods to the brake pedal at all.

The engine in the pics is not in it's final position ( trans is not installed) this moves the engine over a bit and will not touch the master, however it will be tight could be some contact with engine movement. I did not have many options, even the specially machined and prepped hydroboost unit came within a 1/4 inch of the valve covers.

1100.$ comes with what? Just the booster? I went to the website and didn't see any pricing. It looks like they offer a bunch of different kits. They have some BIG ol brakes available, 14.5 in. rotors:ohmy:

1100.$ comes with what? Just the booster? I went to the website and didn't see any pricing. It looks like they offer a bunch of different kits. They have some BIG ol brakes available, 14.5 in. rotors:ohmy:
No, you get the booster and the pump, with the accumulator and various fittings, all pre-wired. See the pump assembly.........

The panels fasten to the rear most panel corners from the inside. I also am using extra long 1/4 inch bolts that replace the factory ones on the trunk hood springs on the front/top of each side panel. Seems to hold each panel solid.

I'm thinking of going with a Haneline product and try and retain the bezel/gauge look as much as possible.

I looked at Haneline too, but thier selection was pretty limited. I ordered a new gauge set up from New Vintage. They have some very cool gauges. http://www.newvintageusa.com/
They hand build each gauge pod.
I picked the 67 series with a tach, speedo, dual gauges for oil pressure/fuel & voltage/temp with LEDs in them for turn signals & highbeam. but they will build anything you want. I really loved the 69 series but would have had to wait a few months to save up more $$.

Rudolph Schenker

where'd you buy the chrome trim for the dash gauges?
The chrome trim is actually just accent trim built into the gauge bezel. The gauge bezel is a repro, (I think I got it from CJ Pony) for a 69 Mach. In the beginning I wanted to keep the mechanical gauges, however it was too difficult to interface them with the EFI sytem and no voltmeter or oil pressure.
I like the JME bezel, but it's overpriced and you lose the original look that I'm trying to retain:001_smile:. ( well as much as possible)

The car is just running now, adjusting the clutch and sorting through some wiring issues. I will get it dyno-tuned for sure. There is a shop in Salt Lake City specializing in Mustangs/mod-motors. I have spoken with them and will get it done before Spring.

Great work. Going through all your pics is inspiring me to do some more work on mine lol
do you have any more pics of the 05 mustang center console installed? i am thinking about doing this too bc i am putting a 6x9 speaker in the fresh air ducts by the foot wells in the front and it blocks any chance for me to install the ebrake pedal there. the 05 console will solve that problem to and it looks 100x better than the original one.

Awesome. Most ported Eaton Cobras are putting down around 500rwhp. That should make your car quite the beast! Not to mention, great fuel mileage on the highway when you aren't under boost. My Whipple'd '03 Cobra puts down 600rwhp, and gets 23 mpg cruising on the highway. Hard to beat modern technology!

The doors and fenders needed re-aligning, also despite my best efforts I'm not able to use the stock hood (just can't get enough clearance for the IAC valve)........... so I'm using a cowl hood (fiberglass) and it will need some prep work :rolleyes:.
Also getting some custom stripes so everything has to line up nicely before they can be applied. Just taking a little more time than I anticipated. :hammer:

That I don't know. The supercharger (IAC valve) was the cause of the hood clearance problems. I'm not sure how much clearance the 2001 intake needs.

The seat belts are from Summit Racing. I think they are Autoloc brand? They were a generic item and pretty reasonable (60-70 bucks). I used a plastic beauty clip to give the slots I cut in the rear trim pieces a "finished look". Those pieces I had left over from when I did my Vette a couple of years ago. I like the hidden retractor mechanism, it cleans up the interior.:001_smile:

Yes I lost some ground clearance, fortunately there is some adjustability with the height on the coil overs. I have 350lbs springs in front and am thinking about changing them for this very reason. I'm not sure about the track width, maybe somebody smarter than me can answer this.

I love your car dude. If you dont mind, can you measure your ride height at the front fender? and if you REALLY dont mind, can you measure how much ground clearance you have under the mustang 2 cross member? Im worried that if I follow in your footsteps, I may have to raise my car to avoid hitting stuff on the road since that cross member hangs below the front frame rails. Last time I measured my car, the fender lip was right at about 24" off the ground. I kinda want to lower the car another inch all around but the front spoiler already scrapes just about everything.

Just read through all 24 pages, amazing attention to detail. Being able to pretty much put any year part in there gives you so many more options than period correct.
Maybe I missed this but when you started you had a deluxe wood grain interior gauge cluster with a tach. Did you paint that cluster black and change the gauges with the new ones or is that a completely different cluster? Also any shot you have the original gray face gauges for sale? I have a mint cluster bezel that it is not a tach version so looking to piece together the rest a little at a time.
